# Groups

Create and manage contact lists for newsletters, clients or members, and use them in campaigns.

Groups are contact lists you manage, such as newsletter subscribers, clients or members. Add people individually or in bulk; they remain in the group until you or an automation removes them.

If you want a list that updates itself from rules, such as "ordered in the last 30 days", use a [segment](/docs/guides/contacts/segments) instead.

## Create a group

1. Go to **Groups** and choose **New group**.
2. Enter a **Group name**, such as *Supper club*.
3. Optionally, add a **Description** so teammates pick the right audience.
4. Choose **Create group**.

You can also create a group on the spot while importing contacts or choosing a campaign's audience.

## Add contacts to a group

There are several ways in:

- **From the group's page:** choose **Add members**, search by name or email, select contacts across pages and add them.
- **From Contacts:** select contacts in the list, then choose **Add to group** from the actions bar. To include everyone who matches your search or filters, not just this page, choose **Select all matching** first.
- **During an import:** use **Add successful contacts to a group**. See [Import contacts](/docs/guides/contacts/import-contacts).
- **From a signup form:** forms can add everyone who signs up to one or more groups.
- **From a journey:** an **Action** step can add contacts to a group or remove them from one. See [Build a journey](/docs/guides/journeys/build-a-journey).

Adding someone who's already in the group does nothing, so you can't create duplicates.

> **Note:** Adding a contact to a group doesn't give consent. A campaign sent to a group only reaches members who have agreed to that channel and aren't suppressed. The members table shows each person's **Email consent**.

## Remove contacts from a group

- On the group's page, choose **Remove** on a member's row, then **Remove from group**.
- On **Contacts**, select contacts and choose **Remove from group**. Removing in bulk is limited to admins and the owner.

Removing someone from a group only ends that membership. The contact, their consent and their other groups are kept.

## Use a group

- **As a campaign audience.** On a campaign's **Audience** step, choose **Saved group or segment** and pick the group. See [Create a campaign](/docs/guides/campaigns/create-a-campaign).
- **In a segment.** Add a **Group membership** condition, for example to include everyone in *Supper club* or to leave out *Staff*.
- **To start a journey.** Use the **Joins a group** trigger, for example to welcome new *Newsletter* members. See [Journeys](/docs/guides/journeys/how-journeys-work).
- **To filter contacts.** On **Contacts**, filter the list by group, or export a group's members (owner only).

## See what uses a group

A group's page lists the campaigns, forms, journeys and segments that use it. Check this before you rename or delete a group.

## Delete a group

On the group's page, open its actions menu and choose **Delete group**. The group and its memberships are removed, but the contacts and their consent are kept.

You can't delete a group while a campaign sends to it. Change the campaign's audience first. Forms, journeys and segments that mention the group will refer to a group that no longer exists, so update them too.

## Groups and test lists

A test list isn't a group. Test lists hold teammates you send test emails to, and never receive real campaigns. See [Test and preview a campaign](/docs/guides/campaigns/test-and-preview).
